Who we are

Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational Christian charity dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide. We work around the world with volunteers from all backgrounds, races and religions to build homes together with families in need.

How it works

Each homeowner family invests hundreds of hours of their own labour or 'sweat-equity' into the building of their home and the homes of other families. This fosters community development, increases the pride of ownership, and reduces the cost of labour - thereby making the homes affordable to families on low incomes. When the homes are complete, the homeowners make mortgage payments to a revolving fund. The money in the fund is used to build more houses.

In addition to the homeowner's sweat equity, homes are built using donations of money and materials from corporate and individual supporters. Volunteers help to build the houses, which significantly reduces the cost.

The results

Through the work of Habitat for Humanity, thousands of low-income families have found new hope through owning a secure, decent home. Individual donors and volunteers, as well as corporations, community groups, university and school groups, churches and others, have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem - decent housing for all.

Since 1976 Habitat for Humanity has built or rehabilitated almost 200,000 houses in 100 countries around the world, becoming a global leader in addressing the issues of poverty housing. Nearly a million people around the world now have safe, decent shelter thanks to Habitat for Humanity, its supporters - and their own hard work.
